Making sure the car will start every time; 12v batteries send that first spark of energy into the engine once the key turns.  They may seem simple, but depending on how fast and powerful the engine, certain ones are needed.

Also, newer technology offers lighter and more powerful batteries for those wanting to go green or just want a little extra juice. Either way, 12v batteries are the power cell of choice for automobiles and recreational vehicles. The only thing to remember is how much power needs to flow through the engine.

Shallow cycle (or starting) 12v batteries deliver a massive dose of power to the engine it’s connected to, but mainly to start it. This type is what’s used for cars, truck, and SUVs since they’re able to use excess energy to power the car on the road.

The batteries themselves have several thin separators to charge the lead-acid mixture inside. What this does is deliver more electricity when the engine is turned on. The only problem with these 12v batteries is the number of times it can be recharged. After a few times of draining and charging, the battery become dead for good and has to be replaced.

Deep cycle 12v batteries are meant for electric vehicles and small motors, including RVs and scooters. The difference is continuous power being fed to the motor. They also have fewer separators, but thicker to deliver a constant amount of electricity. Also, these 12v batteries last longer after being recharged multiple times. They don’t need to be replaced as often as shallow cycle batteries.

However, using one of these in a car would be unwise due to the amount of electricity needed to start a car engine. Deep cycle batteries can’t produce that much power in one burst.

As 2010 bring new technology to the retail market, auto makers have started to offer lithium-ion batteries. These are no different than cell phone batteries, except that they hold more power inside. Compared to lead-acid 12v batteries, these are lighter, cost more, and can be recharged more times.

Currently, Porsche is the only one offering these batteries as an option for their 911 models. If they prove to be better, customers can expect to have one within the next year or so. These will also be available for vehicles and motors needing a deep cycle 12v battery.

12v batteries are nothing special, but they provide long-lasting power for cars, trucks, and RVs across the globe. Just remember that the two types work differently and that’s it. Any store selling auto parts will have the right battery needed. Expect to pay around $35 for generic brands and up to $75 for brand names.

Otherwise, there’s not much to think about when buying a 12v battery. They’re a necessity for any automobile and recreational vehicle on the market. If putting in a new battery seems out of their league, get a pro to pop it in for them or someone at the auto parts store should know how.
