40 1080p Review
By Anne Ahira
The Good
Excellent picture quality; lots of great manufacturers to choose from; most come with high-end features
The Bad
Price is often quite a bit higher than for lower resolutions; some lesser known manufacturers offer inferior televisions
The Bottom Line
Choosing a 40 1080p is a good decision if you’ve made sure the size is right for your room. Make sure you select a well-known brand and don’t have buyer’s remorse about spending extra for the 1080p resolution. The other features usually are well worth the price difference.
Review
Several leading television manufacturers are producing 40 1080p models of televisions now. This seems to be a popular size for consumers, possibly because it works nicely with the average viewing distance in living rooms and dens and because the size not too huge to hang on the wall or to sit on a suitable stand. But should you purchase a 40 1080p?
Part of the decision should be based on the size of the room in which the television will be placed. Having a set that is too large or too small is not going to provide you with the maximize enjoyment of the picture quality.
While showing off an enormous set in your home might seem like a good idea, if your room isn’t large enough then it just won’t work. If the distance between your seating and the screen is more than 10 feet, you’re going to need something larger. If the distance is four feet or less, a 40 1080p is going to be large for your room.
What about the 1080p? That number represents the screen’s resolution. Sets with a 1080p resolution are considered to be at the high-end of the market and usually cost several hundred dollars more than the same size set with a lower resolution.
If you’re on a budget, choosing one of the lower resolutions isn’t an awful decision. Most viewers aren’t going to notice the difference between 1080p and 1080i, although they may notice if choosing the even lower 720p. If you can afford to buy a 40 1080p, you should.
Not only is this higher resolution the way most televisions and entertainment devices will be going in the future but the sets often have some excellent features that are not available on the lower-end models.
If you do decide to purchase a 40 1080p, your next choice is going to be deciding on a brand and manufacturer. The Samsung models consistently seem to perform at the head of the pack, especially with their LCD models.
The Sony Bravia sets are also excellent in terms of picture quality and performance. You’re going to be fairly safe choosing any of the well-known brands, including Toshiba and Mitsubishi. Don’t try to save money by choosing a lesser known brand.
These models usually don’t have the same high level of features nor do they demonstrate the same picture quality. You’d be better off choosing a smaller screen or lower resolution in the long run.
