Recreating the sounds of the local movie theater has become a cheap and enjoyable experience.

However, it can be difficult for many who do not understand how and what is needed to do so. 5.1 Surround Sound is a multi-channel audio format, designed for special sound system and speakers.

The 5 represents the number of speakers used: center, front left & right, and rear left & right. The .1 represents the number of subwoofers.

The best way to purchase 5.1 speakers is to buy an entire system in a box, but audio junkies can feel free to buy separate components for a custom setup. The prices start at about $550, but people may be able to find deals on sites like Amazon.

The more they pay, the better the features and sound quality. Many use wires to send the sound out from the A/V receiver, but some companies offer wireless or Bluetooth connectivity. Check the electronics in order to get the right kind and/ or number of inputs and outputs needed. This way everything can be used without swapping cables.

The best position is to place them level to each other and pointed towards the area people will be sitting. 5.1 surround speakers also function differently, depending on the person’s choice of entertainment.

Movies on DVD or BluRay have 35% of the sound coming from the front, while music DVDs and SACDs (Super Audio CD) maintain an even level all around. If needed, the volume on each individual speaker can be adjusted. The A/V receivers that are available come with presets for different types of entertainment.

Is surround sound good for other things? Yes. Video games, live entertainment, and sports are great for this. Live TV depends on the channel broadcasting, but everything else will display an icon to let you know.

Most video game consoles come with optical outputs to use 5.1 speakers during game play. The games will also show if surround sound is supported. Some sports networks are jumping in to give the fans nationwide a better experience from home.

5.1 surround sound speakers come in multiple sizes and shape to match any décor in the home. It’s recommended that buyers shop around due to so many rival setups on the market. Also, watch for A/V receivers and entertainment that only supports surround sound higher than 5.1. 7.1 is the newest, but most expensive to buy for.

If the sound of jets roaring overhead has them ducking for cover, the 5.1 speakers are there doing what they were made to do. With a wide range of choices, anyone looking should be able to find something they can afford. All in one or separate, the possibilities are infinite when setting one up.

Add this with a 3DTV and it’s a stone’s throw away to almost being in the movie. Sure, it’s not the Holodeck from Star Trek, but definitely one step closer to it. Immerse the people at home with 5.1 speakers and surround sound entertainment.
