The Good

Can hang almost anywhere; gives your home a true theater appearance; high resolution models are available

The Bad

Glass screens are fragile and very heavy – a bad combination; screens also reflect light which can degrade the image quality

The Bottom Line

If you have an empty wall yearning for a massive television, a 50 plasma could be a great choice. Just be aware of the drawbacks that come with owning one of these televisions. Hire professional installers for the mounting brackets and be sure to have the set delivered to your home by professionals as well.

Review

If you’ve been won over by the idea of hanging your television on the wall just as you might hang a portrait, then the 50 plasma model might be for you. By 50, we mean 50 inches. By plasma, we mean one of the hottest television technologies available. While this idea of having a massive screen mounted to your wall almost like in a movie theater is impressive, the real question is should you make the purchase?

Obviously, the ability to hang the screen on the wall is impressive and is not just advertising hype. These screens are so thin that you can literally hang them on almost any wall of your home. In one commercial, a couple even hangs their television on the ceiling of their bedroom.

Because you can hang the screen, you’re going to have more flexibility and can sometimes purchase a larger model than you might have been able to fit in your home otherwise. Plus, you can hide all of the wires and power connections in the wall to give the screen a cleaner appearance.

Now is a good time to consider buying a 50 plasma because prices have started to come down and will undoubtedly come down further as more people adopt HDTV technology. Be careful about buying only on price.

You want to pay attention to the resolution, as well, because this is going to determine the quality of your picture. The lowest resolution you’ll probably find on these models is 720p. You really want either 1080i or 1080p. If you want the best picture quality possible and you can afford the upgrade, go for the full 1080p.

There are some down sides when you purchase a 50 plasma, however. For one, the screen is fragile. Because of the technology, the screen is almost entirely made of glass. Glass can easily be broken obviously. The glass screen also makes the sets heavier than you might imagine.

For this reason, having the wall brackets professionally installed is not a bad idea. Another drawback of the 50 plasma glass screen is that it reflects the light which can cause your image to look bad. When placing the screen, you should avoid any area which will have contact with sunlight or other lighting sources for this reason.
