If you’ve done a bit of shopping for the perfect MP3 music player for your needs, you might have found that many of the best selling products on the market have fairly large hard drives. That doesn’t mean you can’t find some that are smaller.

Another common device is the 512mb MP3 player. If you’re debating about whether to choose a 512mb MP3 player or one that is considerably larger, there are a few pros and cons that might help you make that decision more easily.

Good Reasons to Choose a 512mb MP3 Player Most of the smaller players are going to use flash memory instead of traditional hard drives. That’s an advantage because flash memory is more durable than traditional hard drives because it doesn’t have any moving parts.

If you drop the 512mb MP3 player, for example, you are less likely to do any permanent damage to the device for this reason. Another benefit is the smaller size of the unit. Even though the iPod Nano is relatively small itself, you’re going to find that the average 512mb MP3 player is even smaller and more portable.

If you like to use your digital mp3 player while exercising, for example, these can be a great choice because they are easier to carry or to strap on your shoulder. A number of them are even build specifically for this purpose. Price is also a big benefit.

The price of the average 512mb MP3 player is around $30 to $50 while larger players can cost around $150 and up. Because of the low price and increased durability, these smaller devices are great choices for young children who want portable mp3 players of their own. The Cons of Choosing 512mb MP3 players Despite the advantages listed above, there are some drawbacks to choosing 512mb MP3 players. For one, you’re not going to be able to hold as many songs.

You’ll only be able to fit about 120 songs on one of these players. While that may sound like a lot, it really equals about 10 albums. Most people who enjoy music have more than 10 albums worth of favorite music.

Obviously, the smaller hard drive means these devices don’t play videos. Most either have no screens or very small ones which can make navigating through the library a bit more difficult. If you want a music player that can also play games, these aren’t going to meet your needs. They are strictly for listening to music while on the go.

Additionally, you’re not going to find a 512mb MP3 player being manufactured by any of the major names in MP3 portable players any more. The closest you’ll probably come is the 1 GB Apple Shuffle Mp3 which runs about $50. There’s nothing wrong with purchasing a 512mb MP3 player from an alternative manufacturer, but some of these companies do not have a reputation for producing the best quality products.
