Everybody wants a great sounding stereo with a big booming set of speakers. The only problem is that if you do not have a great big room, then those big booming speakers are a waste of space and money and you would be much better served with a quality set of bookshelf speakers. If you set the system up right, you can get a great sound out of a set of bookshelf speakers and they can get louder than you could ever want. And at $200 – $500, these mid-sized speakers can provide the quality you need at a fraction of the cost.

The generic term bookshelf speakers covers a range of medium sized speakers. The determining factor is that they are not meant to be sitting on the floor. The do not have to go in the bookcase or the stereo cabinet, however. Some room set ups work best with the speakers mounted right to the wall or on their own stands. In other situations there is a convenient table to set the speakers on.

This allows the sound to come out in all directions and bounce around the room providing a full stereo experience. That means that the speakers will be happiest on an uncluttered table or on their own stands rather than attached to the wall or wedged between bestsellers on the bookshelf. It is also best if you can position the speakers at head height. Remember this should be head height while you are listening to music, so if you normally sit on the couch, think three to four feet off the floor, not six feet.

Even though they are only mid-sized, bookshelf speakers will still require a moderately powerful amplifier to allow them to produce adequate sound output. You should also size the amplifier so that it can power a subwoofer. This will fill in on the bass end of things, the one spot where the bookshelf speakers really fall short. The subwoofer can be hidden just about anywhere, even under a table or under the couch as this will not affect its sound output.

Buying a good quality set of bookshelf speakers is a great investment. Your music and movies will sound better than ever. If you decide later on to upgrade to a larger set of speakers, the bookshelf speakers will make exceptional surround sound speakers in the back of a larger room. But chances are you will find that the sound quality of the smaller speakers is more than adequate for the home theatre and stereo use. And the convenience of not having massive speakers taking up square footage in your living room is another huge bonus. Bookshelf speakers can easily blend into the decor so that the room is not dominated by a massive entertainment center.
