When we talk about broadband routers, most Internet savvy customers know exactly what we are talking about.

After all, broadband routers and services have been around for several years now, which in the current scheme of things make them an ancient technology.

But if we take a moment to review the story of broadband routers, we quickly realize that they were a revolutionary technology.

Not only did broadband offer greater speeds and faster download times than dial-up Internet services, but they also did not tie up the phone line. But like any new technology, when broadband routers first came on the scene they were quite expensive. In fact, many folks were reluctant to switch from dial-up to broadband because it was three to five times more expensive.

As with most new technology, the first users of broadband routers were folks who needed it to earn a living, i.e., companies and corporations. These firms calculated almost from the outset that broadband routers would save them money in the long run and that eventually the product costs and monthly service fees would come done.

These prognostications did not require a crystal ball. The simple fact is that almost all new technologies are pricier at the start, but then when technology improves and competition gets fierce, companies are forced to lower prices.

And that is exactly what happened with broadband routers and service fees after only a few years. Later, when competing technologies, DSL and cable, came on the scene, product and service costs fell even more.

These days, dial-up Internet service is every bit as antiquated as the rotary phone. Even after they have dropped their service fees to rock-bottom monthly charges, it seems that nobody wants it. And why would they? It is slower, less reliable, and the service costs are not that much cheaper.

In the final analysis, dial-up Internet service is going the way of the dodo. It is an antiquated technology and it will likely be completely eradicated in the next few years as prices for broadband continue to fall.

Why choose a broadband router? As you may know, there is a difference between a router and a modem. Most laptops and desktops these days have an internal modem, but they will not include a router. A router is an external device that is used to connect your computer to the Internet.

Before you ask, the answer is yes. Both devices have the same primary function, i.e., to connect you to the Internet. The only difference is that a modem is used on a single computer, whereas a router is responsible for connecting several computers to the Internet.

There are often utilized for home networks and nowadays most of them are wireless. That means that users can connect to the Internet at any time they want if they are in range of broadband routers.
