C Batteries

Batteries have been constantly used to power portable devices even before the digital age. Nowadays, the latest gadgets that are most frequently used are powered by batteries that can be recharged multiple times.

Smaller devices and gadgets may still rely on smaller batteries that can be used once with C batteries being the larger and more powerful batteries for medium-drain applications such as musical instruments, toys, and other gadgets.

Types of C Batteries

C batteries are classified according to their capacity in mAh (milliampere-hour). Carbon Zinc batteries are popular because they are available in lots of places and do not cost as much as the other types of C Batteries.

Because these batteries can only hold around 3,800 mAh, these battery types are best suited for gadgets that have low to moderate power requirements. Examples of such devices are flashlights, amplifiers, radios, and some toys. These batteries have the lowest capacity and have a storage life of up to 1 and a half years.

Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) C batteries were seen as the first consumer rechargeable batteries that have a reasonable price tag. It uses an oxidation process to equalize the oxidation occurring at the negative electrode and the reduction at the positive electrode to generate power. NiMH batteries are more popular for modern use since the Ni-Cd C batteries only have a minimum capacity of 2,000 mAh.

NiMH (Nickel-metal hydride) rechargeable C batteries have nearly double the capacity of Carbon Zinc batteries capable of holding up to 6,000 mAh (minimum of 3,000 mAh).

They are primarily applied in high-discharge devices like remote-controlled cars, walkie-talkies, portable TVs, older digital cameras, and many handheld devices and portable media players. They can also be used for devices with medium or low discharge rates as well. Unlike the Carbon Zinc, these batteries can be recycled.

The highest capacity C batteries are the Alkaline C batteries which boast higher capacities up to 8,000 mAh. These batteries are commonly known as “14A” according to ANSI standardizations.

They also have higher voltage at 1.5 volts. These are the preferred types of batteries when long life is needed. The only downside when compared to the Ni-Cd batteries is the lower recharge life at around 300-400 cycles.

If buying batteries made by popular brands like Duracell and Energizer, be sure that the models are the latest as their prices aren’t extremely high compared to the older models. Choosing the right battery can be rewarding with higher battery life which means that the frequency in changing batteries is less.

Be sure to check the type of battery as well which is usually on the fine print and check any product reviews made by other Amazon customers. Once you found the right battery for the device, just take note of it so you can keep getting that same battery once the batteries have been drained.
