Choosing a Portable Car Battery Charger
By Anne Ahira
Choosing a portable car battery charger is not a difficult task, but it may prove to be a bit challenging if you are not familiar with what to look for. The portable battery chargers assist in tasks such as jump starting engines that have stalled for one reason or another and also as an emergency supply of power if it becomes necessary.
If you find that you are out and about in your vehicle and that your battery has died for one reason or another, it is often difficult to locate someone that can assist you. By having your own battery charger, you can avoid this complication.
Typically, a portable car battery charger has a built in 12 volt battery that is rechargeable. The actual weight of the charging system is heavily determined by the battery that is contained within the enclosure. However, most units weigh anywhere between twenty and thirty-five pounds total.
The price of such a device is dependent upon many factors. While there are many different options that are priced lower than $100.00, there are other models that are priced well over $100.00. It is important that you consider the amount of money that you have to budget for this expense prior to actually shopping. Knowing the monetary amount that you have available will allow you to narrow down your choices.
It is important to know and understand that starting a vehicle takes an immense degree of power. If you have a vehicle that is considered to be a four cylinder, a very basic portable car battery charger will likely prove to be efficient. If you have a vehicle that is a six cylinder or an eight cylinder, the car charger will need to have a larger amount of power.
You will notice that when you purchase your charger, there will be a specific number associated with the cranking amps of the product. You should refer to the paperwork provided by your car’s manufacturer to determine the cranking amps that your car requires. Once you identify this number, you should make certain that you only buy a charger that matches it.
When choosing a portable car battery charger, you will find that there is another specification associated with the product that is referred to as “Peak Amps”. This number is always higher than the actual amps that are related to cranking your vehicle.
This number is usually up to 1000 amps but there are chargers that have a peak amp power that is lower than 1000 amps. You can think of these amps as a type of backup for the cranking amps. Unfortunately, you will not be able to identify the number that is correct for your vehicle. Next, you should consider the features of the product. If you follow these basic steps, you will discover that it is easy to choose a portable car battery charger.
