Component Cable

By Anne Ahira

In order to make this article something that makes a little sense we need to tell you that a Component Cable is a cable that carries a non-audio signal. Usually the different parts or components of the video signal are separated so that they can’t interfere with one another. This is why it is called a component video cable.

A Component Cable can be as simple as the standard RCA cable in which the various signals are carried by individual cables. S-Video, RGB and YpbPr cables are all examples of this type of cable. They all split the signal in different ways and allow you to get an even better video signal from the source to the television.

The RGB formation of the Component Cable uses a variant of the standard RCA cable and connections to carry the video portions of the signal. RGB stands for Red, Green Blue, which are the main colors used in any and all video to make colors appear on the television. Each of the separate cables also carries a lot of redundant information such as the black data and the white data of the same image.

Today the RGB Component Cable at least in the world of Personal Computers is analog is loosing ground as the DVI connector because the latter is digital, which is the way video is going these days. For the home theatre enthusiasts the HDMI cable and connection is fast becoming the industry standard and most high quality components such as DVD players, Blue Ray Players and even satellite Television offer an HDMI port to get the best quality video out of the item and onto your screen.

Component Cables of the YpbPr variety use Chroma and Luma signals in order to give color. It is a form of color-coding that has become quite popular as of late and is found on a lot of current components on the market for consumer grade and above.

There are a number of different plug configurations available or Component Cable. There are the “D” terminal which is popular in a lot of Japanese electronics, the RCA or BNC connectors, three of each the BNC being used in pro grade and RCA for the consumer grade items. In Europe they use a connector called SCART to bring the signal over to the component and many PCs use VIVO or Video In Video Out connectors on a 9-pin plug.

For the most part, the type of equipment you own will dictate your choice of Component Cables. The type of gear you are adding and the geographic location where you live. As they say, when in Rome do as the Romans do. The caveat there would be if you were planning on switching countries, in which case I would advise you to wait and purchase your video stuff in your new location.
