Choosing Your Computer Speaker System
By Anne Ahira
Nearly all homes soon will or now have a computer. They are used for various purposes including home business, email, games and much more. One thing all computers need is a computer speaker system.
What type of system is entirely up to you and can range from a simple two speaker set up that most computers ship with to complex surround sound systems. The one you should choose really depends on what you use your computer for and your personal taste.
Irregular User
If you are on your computer very seldom and when you are, the sessions last long enough to check your email, you will likely be happy with a two-speaker system.
These speakers connect simply to your computer and offer just basic sound. Something like the Logitech S120 2.0 system will be just the thing for your computer.
Features
- 2.0 Speaker System
- Response Bandwidth – 50Hz-20KHz
- Nominal Output Power (Total) — 2.3 Watt
- $11.99 Amazon
Moderate User
You are the type of person who will spend an hour or more per day at your computer. You may enjoy playing mp3 files or editing photos on your system but you generally tire of the computer and go find something more active to do.
If this sounds like your computer, usage you may also like to play your CD or saved music through your system while doing something else around the house. Altech has just the speakers for you.
Features- Lansing BXR-1120
- 2.5 speaker system
- 3 watts continuous power
- 6 watts total peak power

This computer speaker system will not rattle the windows or get you arrested but for a cheap price, you can have excellent sound for the casual user.
Heavy User- Gamer
You are the kind of person who takes your computer seriously. You probably spend more time in front of the monitor than anywhere else, and may like to play multiplayer online games.
Sound is of the utmost importance for many reasons, but particularly because you are on the system so often that you will notice right away poor sound quality. You may want to look into a 5.1 surround for your computer speaker system.
Features – Logitech G51 Surround
- 4 satellites, 1 center channel, 1 subwoofer
- Control pod
- Color-coded audio cables
- Gaming and music modes
- $399 Amazon
Bottom Line
Computer speaker system requirements will be as varied as the people who use them. When you are considering upgrading your speaker system, keep in mind the usage you have planned for your system.
If you are a true audiophile nothing less than a surround sound system will satisfy, however if you rarely use your computer a simple two speaker set up will be fine.
