D Batteries
By Anne Ahira
A D-cell battery is but one of many types of electrochemical cells, ranging from the smallest AAA type to AA, C, and finally the largest of those, the D batteries.
A D-cell is cylindrical in appearance and will have with electrical contacts showing at each end. You can always know the positive side of a D-cell battery by the fact that it has a bump or nub at that end.
ANSI, headquartered in Washington D.C. but operating out of New York City, which is the American National Standards Institute, is a very worthy totally private as well as non-profit organization whose task it is to oversee the development of completely voluntary consensus standards for personnel, systems, processes, services as well as products in the United States.
It further engages in the coordination of U.S. standards with known international standards so that American products will be used worldwide which allows you to find camera batteries worldwide for your U.S. camera.
Thus it should come as no surprise that D batteries were standardized by ANSI. The international appellation for a D cell that we in the United States, through ANSI, call a 13A (for alkaline) battery, is LR20 (alkaline). Our D is constructed on its carbon-zinc chemistry.
If you look closely at D batteries, you’ll see that it is sold as a heavy-duty cell since it will be used for higher-current drain applications. This means that D cells are sold for use in applications that run for an extended amount of time.
Examples include, among many others, safety systems, products having motors, portable entertainment systems, radio transmitters and receivers, and of course large flashlights such as used in the police departments.
In actuality, D batteries are called dry cells. A battery is made up of a single chamber, or sometimes it has been packed with an electrolyte paste as well as an electrode rod.
A single use D cell battery has the nominal output voltage of 1.5 volts Rechargeable cell batteries, known as NiCd and NiMH have a nominal voltage of 1.2 volts. Interestingly enough the terminal voltage of a D cell battery is the same as a C, AA, or AAA but they can store additional energy and thus can supply current longer.
Battery capacity is measured in mAh. These letters, mAh stand for Milliamp Hour, a technical term that has been given to discuss exactly how much power a certain battery will hold.
Thus if you desire you may see the differences in capacity of each kind of battery without thoroughly understanding mAh. For instance, a AA battery has an mAh capacity of 2,400, a C battery has an mAh capacity of 7,800 mAh, but a D battery has an mAh capacity of 12,000!
It is recommended that whenever replacing D batteries in any power draining application that all the batteries have matching mAh values. Or else, it is likely that one lesser mAh battery may drain before the others, which will cause extra strain upon the remaining batteries.
