DB9 Cable

By Anne Ahira

Technology as you may or may not know moves at a lightening pace. In fact, the computer you just picked up at the electronics store is already six months out of date.

Ever since the first personal computers were made, this has been the case. It really is phenomenal that no, sooner than a computer company can get a device manufactured they have already discovered the next best thing.

This leads to problems with connectivity at times. Consumers just are settled into one product and something better comes along. Take for instance the older Palm Treo handhelds, there are several of these still in use today and they require a serial connection in order to connect to a computer. The problem is computers no longer have these serial ports, most if not all are strictly USB. That is where a connecting cable like the DB9 cable will rescue you.

A DB9 cable has a serial connection on one end, like the Palm Treo needs, and a USB connection on the other, like the computer needs. With this cable, the two can become friends again and play nice.

A DB9 cable is like the bridge between technologies, the old and the new. For a small amount of cash you can continue to use the older devices your know and love while updating your personal computer to a safer more secure system.

Features

  • High speed USB to serial (9 pin)
  • 6 foot long
  • Blue
  • Works with- cameras, cell phone, PDA, and modems
  • Operating system- Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, or Vista, MAC OS 8.6 and above

Pros

Connect any serial device to the USB ports on your personal computer. This is handy in scenarios like above or for instances where you only have one serial port on your computer and many devices. Now you will not be limited in the number of devices you can use with your home computer.

The six-foot length is perfect for most devices. Enough room to move them around a bit but not to connect them from across the room. Should not be an issue for most instances.

Cons

Mac operating systems may have a little trouble with the DB9 cable. As the company advertised, the cable will only work with MAC OS 8.6 or above. Some MAC owners have been disappointed so be aware.

The information about the DB9 cable is scanty at best. The disc included is not much help in this department either. You will likely find the most help for any problems through an online search.

Overall

If you need to connect older peripherals to your new computer the DB9 cable can help you do so. The nicest thing about it is if you order the DB9 cable on Amazon you will only be spending about $13 and you can return it if the cable will not work with your device.
