I am old enough to remember when a projector was needed in a classroom the AV Dept. (audio visual) used to send a pimply faced gangly boy to bring it into the classroom.

We’d watch whatever movie or slides the teacher wanted us to view and the boy would return and bring the revered projector back to the AV Dept. Or, there were times when an overhead projector was needed in a large class.

I was always sure to sit in the front of the class if I could then, because the projectors were not very good, and trust me on this; it was never a Digital Projector!

Today if you need a projector it’s probably because you need to share a PowerPoint presentation or even spread sheets. There are many things to consider now if you are looking at a digital projector.

First, you should consider if it would be used in 10 to 15 viewers or more? Obviously you need a much better projector if it will be used in a huge room such as an assembly room or such. Is it a room that has ambient lighting, or a room where the lights may be turned off and darkness would prevail if the projector were not on?

You will need a different digital projector depending on the screen location too. If the screen will come down from the ceiling or is a stand-alone screen it will make a big difference in what you are seeking. Will you be able to set up the projector so that all viewing members will have an non-obstructed view?

The amount of image quality that can be seen on the screen may matter a lot, for instance if the words in your projection are not clear as can be, they will be difficult to read. You should verify whether a particular digital projector will be as easy to read the projection if it’s dark text on a light background, as well as on light text but a dark background.

If you are to carry the digital projector yourself, you need to ascertain the exact weight of it, and whether or not it fits in a luggage compartment on an airplane for instance. You may also check, if you need to travel with it, if it has a good carrying case included, or even if the case is equipped with wheels.

A digital projector will be “rated” by its lumens, which is its brightness level. For example if a projector is rated for 1,000 lumens, it means that it’s rated for the initial 10-15 viewers mentioned above, and the room should be able to be darkened, or at least have very little ambient light. Whereas a digital projector rated 1,500-2,000 lumens would work well in an auditorium or in a room that has a lot of ambient light.

Finally, make sure that it comes equipped for a remote control so that if you need to walk around as you make your presentation, the projector would still be quite handy. Using a digital projector today does not even need a pimply-faced kid anymore!
