DVD Recorder Hard Drive
By Anne Ahira
Everything has a hard drive nowadays. Mp3 player, cell phones, game systems and now DVD recorders.
With a DVD recorder hard drive based model you can now record movies from television or back up your current DVD library.
Simply save them to the built in hard drive then pick and choose later which ones to save to disc and which ones to delete.
Kind of like TiVo with the advantage of not having to pay for a subscription!
Features
- 80 GB hard drive
- Hybrid VBR (variable bit rate) technology
- Time slip
- Progressive scan output
- Plays DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, music CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs
- Dolby digital surround
- Parental lock
Pros
With the time slip technology, you can now watch a movie or television show that is currently being recorded from the beginning. In other words, you can back up a movie that is currently being recorded and watch it while it continues to record without messing it up!
With Panasonics DVD recorder hard drive based you can hook up as many as three different video inputs to record from and use the timer function. This is a big improvement over the TiVo models.
One thing that will tell you a lot about a product is the test of time and this Panasonic DVD player hard drive based has come through several years of hard use with little or no issues. Customers have reported using the unit daily for three and four years with no technical problems at all.
The combination of a DVD player and recorder in one handy unit is a great idea that Panasonic has executed well. Even though this is an older model unit, it still gets high marks and recommendations from customers who have purchased it in the past.
Cons
You will learn quickly that although it has an 80 GB hard drive you really do not want to fill it up with media. This has caused some failure in equipment and the best idea is to record them to DVD disc or delete them before the hard drive fills up.
After several years of use, one customer had a massive failure that local repair shops were unable to address. Once the unit was returned to the company, an internal board was replaced and the unit was good as new. This seems to indicate that the company is fully aware of the issue but have not let customers know.
Overall
If you are in the market for a new player, why not make it a DVD recorder hard drive model?
