Gaming Routers
By Anne Ahira
Game systems have evolved over the last 20 years until they are almost unrecognizable to their parent systems.
Remember the old Atari games that had square people and the most fun you could have was Pong or Yars Revenge?
Today’s gamers have the luxury of high-end graphics and online play. You never have to be bored because there is always someone awake in the world to play.
You can connect to the internet in two ways via an Ethernet connection to your computer or by using gaming; routers, which are, provide a wireless internet network.
Wireless gaming routers are becoming more popular as game systems and computers are spread out over the home.
With a router, you can have several computers and game boxes connected at the same time without creating a jungle of wires running all over the house. One very popular model is the D-Link wireless gaming routers.
Features
- Up to 108 Mbps
- 802.11g wireless connectivity
- 4 Ethernet ports
- Customizable settings
- High performance CPU
Although these are billed as gaming routers the truth is they have many applications.
Pros
These gaming routers intelligently prioritizes? network traffic for better performance of band-with sensitive applications like VOIP or multimedia programs. In other words, you will have fewer problems with dropped calls or disconnected game systems.
You also get the benefit of a high performance CPU; this allows multitasking between apps without loss of game connectivity and supports thousands of concurrent connections. Bottom line better peer-to-peer and multiplayer activity.
When you are dealing with computer networking, anyone can tell you it often gets very frustrating. One device or the other will not be recognized or you will have limited connectivity issues. With gaming routers like this one, you simply plug everything in and go!
Cons
Though it is easy enough to hook up some advanced users may encounter technical difficulties.
For instance playing a computer game like World of War Craft is not a problem, however if you want to host the game you will run into some problems. This of course is does not fall within the realm of average user problems.
As game routers or even routers in general go the D-Link is a bit more expensive. You can purchase routers from Netgear or Lynksys are cheaper but as many consumers have found they are more prone to dropping calls on VOIP and game system disconnects.
Overall
D-Link is one of the best game routers on the market. It should actually be sold as a primary wireless router rather than focusing on the gamer end of it. Many people will find this to be a great wireless router for their home computer network.
