Garmin 201
By Anne Ahira
You have probably heard of the Garmin line of products. The most well known product is there a dash mount GPS literally system, this little device helps you get around town.
However, did you know they also made a wrist mounted fitness computer? The Garmin 201 can help you track distance, time and place while you are jogging or bicycling.
Features
- Waterproof
- Integrated GPS
- Displays progress on favorite routes
- Saves 100 locations
- Breakdown work out statistics by day or cumulative weeks
- Adjustable wrist band
- Virtual partner mode
Pros
Jogging or exercising is always more fun with a partner however today people are so busy it can be hard to find someone who has the time to jog when you do. When you do find someone, they may run at a different pace than you do. The virtual partner on the Garmin 201 takes care of that problem. In this mode, you can set pace, time and distance goals, and then race against the digital computer.
The Garmin 201 may seem a bit bulky at first but you will quickly find the unit is light and portable, plus you will love the larger screen that allows you to check your progress at a glance.
The number one problem with any portable electronic device is battery life. Most of the time the manufacturer’s suggested battery life is just that, a suggestion. The reality usually falls well below advertisement. The Garmin 201 on the other hand lives up to the 13-hour advertising.
An electronic device can do everything including mow the lawn but if people cannot afford it what is the point. The Garmin 201 retails for around $130, about the price of midrange mp3 players. This is a fair price for device with as many features as the Garmin 201 GPS fitness computer.
Cons
As you may have noticed this unit depends on GPS for many of its functions. What this means is the Garmin 201 must interact with satellites and in heavily wooded areas this could present a problem.
To get optimal performance from these GPS device consumers will have to stay on top of firmware updates. It seems over time the Garmin 201 begins acting buggy doing things like giving inaccurate distances, pace and time. This can be very frustrating for a serious athlete.
Overall
Staying in shape is a worthy goal in this handy device can help keep you motivated. Keep track of how far you have run, how fast and even how many calories you burn. Over 300 people have purchased and rated the Garmin 201 on Amazon, 2/3 of them give it at least a four out of five.
