As will happen often times a company will discontinue a popular product to make way for a newer advanced model. This is the case with the Garmin 2610 GPS device.

Garmin is no longer making or selling the Garmin 2610 and you will be hard put to find it available even on the used or refurbished market.

The upgrade to the Garmin 2610 is the 2720, a newer unit with a few more functions than its predecessor. Let’s look at some of the improvements over the prior model.

Garmin 2610 and 2720

These units share many features; here are the things that carried over from the Garmin 2610 to the 2720.

  • Users can enter multiple destinations in both of these units. You can enter up to 250 destinations along your route and the unit will automatically calculate the best directions.
  • Custom avoidance feature for road hazards or preferred road types is also available on both models. You can specify sections of road that you would prefer to avoid along the way.
  • As important as what they both have is what they do not have. Many people like a portable unit they can slide in a shirt pocket for easy transference to another vehicle or safekeeping. Neither of these GPS, units fit this description; both are rather large and bulky.
  • Neither unit has a battery backup; they both will require external power. This is not a big deal unless you are planning many stops in a short amount of time, if so you will need to remember to give the GPS a moment to acquire satellite signal before you head off again.
  • You can store up to 50 different routes on both the Garmin 2610 and the 2720.
  • Accidents can happen and both of these units are prepared for immersion in water! Each one will be functional after immersion in water for 30 minutes or less up to 1 meter.

As you can see not a lot has changed from the Garmin 2610 to the 2720. However, there were a few upgrades, such as screen size, user interface and a few other enhanced features.

Text to Speech

With the Garmin 2610, you had text to speech but it was not very detailed. The directions would consist of turn left in 500 feet with no further instructions. The 2720 on the other hand gives you instructions like turn left in 500 feet on Main Street.

Preloaded Maps

The Garmin 2610 did not come with preloaded maps. You had to instead load them yourself from the included disc. The 2720 has skipped this hassle and comes to you ready to use right out of the box.

Conclusion

While the Garmin 2610 was a popular GPS device, it was lacking in some basic areas and was replaced by the 2720. Both are great GPS devices, but the 2610 will be hard if not impossible to find. If you need a new GPS unit for your next vacation consider the 2720 or another of Garmin’s quality navigational tools.
