GPS systems are becoming an assurance that no one will ever be lost again! They are sophisticated little devices that use satellite communications and internal maps to determine your current location and the most logical route to any destination you put in.
Some of these units even come with optional marine cartography for use on your boat units like the Garmin 296 are a prime example. In fact, this little unit will allow you to navigate by air, land or sea!

The Garmin 296 is much more than a standard GPS for the automobile; it has air and sea capabilities as well. Fly to the island of your choice, boat around the area and then make it to your hotel all with the same navigational device. Now that is what you call versatile.
Air
For pilots the Garmin 296 is a wonderful piece of equipment. It offers them information on a variety of factors that could affect flight plans. Some of these features include:
- Terrain and obstacle information- Pilots are alerted through a series of tones or alerts if there are any potential obstacles to their flight path. The Garmin 296 also has a look ahead feature that will issue warnings and give a pilot the much needed extra time for crucial decisions.
- Configurable- Pilots are able to set limits on the terrain obstacle range. Potential hazards will then be alerted by yellow for ground proximity of 500-1000 feet and red for 100 feet or less.
Land
Once you have landed safely you can then easily switch the unit to automotive mode for use in your car or truck. Here it will perform much like any other GPS device you use in your vehicle.

It is hard to imagine a device with more uses for the world traveler than this one. Of course do not expect to pick one up cheap; this unit retails $995 online.
