Garmin GPS Maps

By Anne Ahira

Garmin GPS devices are standard in many new vehicles and people like them so well that they are adding them to their older vehicles as well.

There is something about having a personal map assistant sitting on your dash that gives people confidence when traveling. However as everyone knows the roads do not stay the same from year to year.

Many cities and states are busy putting in new bypasses and freeway exits every day. If you need any proof of this travel I90 in and around Chicago Illinois!

To keep up with these trends manufacturers either could build a new model Garmin GPS every year or so, or provide customers with updated maps when they are called for.

It does not take a rocket scientist to know which one the company chose to go with. You can now purchase updated Garmin GPS maps for your onboard GPS device.

Pros

You have two choices when purchasing these Garmin GPS maps. You can purchase the disc from a reputable retailer or from the Garmin official site.

When getting the maps from the site you will be required to download a large package to your computer and then transfer it to the GPS unit.

If you have DSL or broadband internet this, might not be an issue but for most it is recommended to get the Garmin GPS maps on disc.

Transferring the Garmin GPS maps to your GPS unit is simple. Connect the unit to your computer and transfer the files over, it is as simple as that! The entire process will likely take you about an hour and a half.

So far, all reports indicate that the Garmin GPS maps are very accurate. Aside from a couple of gas stations in Atlanta being on the wrong side of the road users are very satisfied.

Cons

If you have already updated to the 2008 Garmin GPS maps this update may be a waste of time for you. Apparently, not much has changed between the two updates and people were a little peeved about that.

As you can imagine paying $50 for an update that is not much different from the one you already have would not make for a good day.

You should know up front that installing these updated Garmin GPS maps will wipe out all previous data from the machine. Of course, the maps are more up to date but some customers were not happy about this feature.

Bottom Line

An electronic device is only as good as the information it has to work with. If you want the best maps and information for travel, you will want to periodically update your Garmin GPS maps.
