Garmin Navigation Devices
By Anne Ahira
Garmin navigationdevices are currently the most popular on the market today. Though there are several respected competitors, none of them have come close to catching the leader. According to every review that we have read, there are a number of legitimate reasons for this. After all, GPS (Global Positioning Systems) have not been around for all that long. Garmin itself was founded in 1989, which makes them a veritable youngster compared to most market leaders.
Why are they popular? With a substantial market lead and enviable reviews, Garmin navigation devices are clearly on the top of the heap. And although there may be several legitimate reasons for this, two of the most obvious are ease of use and innovation.
Fact is, most people don’t enjoy driving, especially when they have to follow directions. They also often fear getting lost and looking like a fool in front of friends or family members. Why do you think most men simply refuse to stop and ask for directions? Not only does it imply defeat, but it is also quite embarrassing. Thankfully, GPS devices helped put an end to all that when they were released in the nineteen nineties.
But as with most new technologies, the early Garmin navigation devices were fairly unreliable and inconsistent. The primary concern at the outset was that they could not pinpoint a vehicle’s exact location. That means that people could never depend entirely on the directions they were give because the tracking system was off, often by a few hundred feet. So, if you were driving in the city, it was easy to get lost due to slow directions.
Since then, however, Garmin navigationdevices have come a long way. Not only can they pinpoint your location without a foot or two, but they also offer a number of essential and helpful features. One of the most sought after is the new voice recognition feature that is available on many high-end Garmin products.
Why is it helpful? Well, with many other GPS devices you have to constantly press buttons and type in addresses, especially if your plans unexpectedly change. But with Garmin navigationdevices you can operate and reprogram the unit at the drop of a hat, completely hands free. This is an invaluable feature for people who do a lot of traveling on their own. After all, if you don’t have a hands free device, you might have to stop every time you need to reprogram your GPS device or risk getting in an accident.
Although we don’t have any exact figures, you would be surprised by the number of people who are involved in serious accidents simply because they have to reprogram or interact with their GPS device. Really, the GPS is a lot like the new cell phone of the road. It is helpful, but at times distracting and sometimes even dangerous.
It is important to note that only a select number Garmin navigational devices currently offer this feature and that you should expect to pay quite a bit more for it. However, as we mentioned, if you are a person who consistently travels alone, it is important to purchase a device with voice recognition capabilities.
