Garmin Software Updates

Garmin produces some of the most reliable GPS (Global Positioning System) on the market today. However, they do require a bit of maintenance. In this article we are going to discuss Garmin Software and how it can ensure that you will never get lost in the middle of nowhere again.
When most folks purchase a Garmin device they do not realize that it takes more to run the device than simply plugging it in. But if they had taken the time to read the instruction manual (few do) they would have discovered that Garmin Software offers invaluable online support.
How does it work?
Like any computer software, Garmin Software must occasionally be updated. You see, all Garmin devices come complete with pre-loaded maps, but things sometimes change. Perhaps a road is renamed or a new highway opens up. Whatever the reason, directions and maps are not static, which is why the Garmin Software must be updated from time to time. This can be done online.
Where to begin?
First you need to register you Garmin product. Yes, we know…what good does it do to registering a product? Well, in this case it is actually quite important, because if you don’t register your Garmin, then you cannot receive product updates. That is why you need to visit the Garmin site and go to the Find Map Updates page. This is where you will find everything you need to successfully update your Garmin software.
Once you have selected the model you own, all you have to do is register your device or sign in and you can begin your free map update. The process is far easier if you have a USB cable, but you can also enter your serial number to receive these updates.
Typically, you will receive at least one free map update, but after that you may be asked to remit a nominal fee. If you do not wish to pay, you can cancel the update process at any time. However, we do recommend that you update your Garmin software at least once a year.
Before you begin, it is important to read the user directions. Though they do not differ all that much, there are separate directions for Mac and Windows users that should be perused before you update your software.
How does it help?
If you use your Garmin device everyday, then you know that they are often able to acquire a satellite signal in under a minute. However, if you do not use your GPS unit all that often, it may take several minutes to find a signal and to pinpoint your location. If you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky, you should not have any problem locating a satellite. But what most users don’t know is that oftentimes when their devices fail it is because they do not have current, updated software.
In fact, if you have used your device in the past and it fails to acquire a signal after 3-5 minutes, then there is a good chance that a Garmin software update is required.
