Finding your Next Pair of Hunting Binoculars
By Anne Ahira
Going on a hunting expedition is a serious adventure because no matter what place the destination is, there is no way of anticipating what may occur on the land or sky. There could be some birds flying above or some animals yards away.
Preparing the essential hiking and survival gear is necessary for a safe expedition and getting a good pair of hunting binoculars makes the expedition enjoyable as the binoculars are meant to get a closer view at the animals to be hunted or any birds in the sky depending on the model.
Hunting binoculars deserve their own category apart from the standard binoculars because certain features and specifications are required to make them best suitable for hunters. Here are some of the most important things to look for when finding a new pair of hunting binoculars.
Main Specifications
Two general figures describe the main specifications of hunting binoculars. The first one is the magnification level of the binoculars. The higher the number, the closer the object will when used.
The number serves as a multiplayer for the magnification power. The second figure describes the diameter of the lens. Higher numbers mean better, clearer, and brighter visuals at the cost of weight.
Binoculars are usually considered as hunting binoculars if they have 8 times the magnification power with a 42mm objective diameter size (or 8×42). 10×42 is acceptable as well if a higher magnification is really needed.
Avoid getting higher objective diameters as these pairs are a bit bulkier making them harder to handle leading to shakes. A tripod can fix this problem to stabilize the bigger lens.
Field of View
This is where hunting binoculars can be very different with birding binoculars. When using birding binoculars, the field of view must be wide to get a glimpse at all of the bird activity and search for more birds. Hunting binoculars are just the opposite where only the target can be seen when standing at around 1000 yards away.
High-end Binoculars
As long as the main specifications and field of view are covered by the pair of hunting binoculars, any of the models including the ones sold in Amazon.com should function as good binoculars. However, getting the cheapest hunting binoculars available may not always be the best idea especially for people that often go on hunting expeditions.
Comfort should be one of the biggest concerns especially if the pair will be bought at Amazon.com since there is no way to try them out. Fortunately, each pair of binoculars is accompanied by reviews made by real customers that usually comment whether or not they are really comfortable.
High-end binoculars usually get better reviews and are more rugged as well boasting waterproof designs for further protection. Some may even have better controls to make it easier for entry-level users to use.
A pair of hunting binoculars make any expedition complete and it may help in non-hunting related activities as well since it does bear similarities to standard binoculars.
