If you are a casual computer user who has a single computer and an internet connection you will have no need of the ability to control more than one computer with a single keyboard, monitor and mouse.

However if you have several computers you need to control at the flip of a switch then you will need a device like the keyboard, video and mouse or KVM Trendnet manufactures.

KVM switches used to be reserved for huge data centers where multiple computers had to be monitored at the same time.

Thanks to innovations in technology, this is no longer the case; switches have become smaller and more economical allowing even casual users the option.

This simple device will connect to two or more computers and allow the user to control all of them with one keyboard, mouse and monitor. There are many of these switches on the market today; here we will look at the KVM Trendnet 4-port switch.

Features

  • Manage four computers
  • USB interface
  • KVM Trendnet cables, set of 4
  • KVM: To KVM: 1 x VGA/SVGA HDB 15-pin; To PC: 1 x USB (Type A), 1 X VGA/SVGA HDB 15-pin
  • 4 Sets of Audio/MIC Cables

Pros

Of course the first thing you see with this KVM Trendnet switch is the ability to control up to four computers with one set of controls, i.e. keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers and microphone. You no longer have to move from one desk or keyboard to another to control your computers.

The price of the KVM Trendnet switch is about a fourth of what you will pay for a similar device from the competition. For less than $60 on Amazon you can be up and running in no time flat.

Set up is quite easy, all the cables you will need are included with the KVM Trendnet plus you have no software to download. Simply plug it in according to directions, wait for the first computer to be recognized and then move to the next computer and so on.

Cons

At first glance, the KVM Trendnet looks like a small device, and without all the cables, it is relatively small. However once all the cables are connected you will need about a five foot area.

This is because the cables come off both sides of the unit; even with good management, you will still have quite a mess of wires on your hands.

Bottom Line

The KVM Trendnet does exactly what it is supposed to do; it allows you to effortlessly switch between two or more computers without moving from one place to the next.

At times, the delay of about 5 seconds could be frustrating, however for the price this is a small inconvenience. Overall, this product is highly recommended.
