The Lead Acid Battery

This may come as a shock to you but the Lead Acid Battery was actually born or invented if you prefer back in the year 1859 by a French Scientist named Gaston Plante and his design was one of the first rechargeable batteries known to man.
For the most part a Lead Acid Battery has a low energy to weight ratio and a low energy to volume ration. On top of that they have a fairly significant power to weight ratio. In other words they typically take up a lot of room for what they do. However the world would pretty much be moving at a snails pace respectively if they were not invented.
The best example of a Lead Acid Battery can be found in every garage and / or driveway in the world. It is under the hood of your car and it is your battery. It supplies a nice short burst of energy when you turn the key and starts your engine and recharges as you drive and gives you a fairly stable usage over its life span.
A Lead Acid Battery contains several cells full of a lead plate of some sort and some acid. These two react to one another and create the energy, which is then stored for future use. Keep in mind that this is an over simplification. The actual plates are not truly made of solid lead but rather a mixture of small amounts of antimony, tin, calcium and selenium that is alloyed to the plate. Care needs to be used so as to not over charge the unit because the result can be a rather explosive gas.
A Lead Acid Battery can be found in everything from your car to motorcycles and on to the watercrafts that you see on the lakes and rivers of the world that use power boats. Emergency or back up lighting and burglar alarms also use these batteries because they maintain a charge when connected to a current and they require little to no upkeep or maintenance
Most modern day Lead Acid Battery units are of the sealed variety, which further minimizes maintenance and also the chance of accidents, which might result in an acid spill or explosion. This type of battery is also typically vented so that it can curtail the build up of potential explosive gases internally.
A Lead Acid Battery is one of the many things that we use in our daily lives that we might never think about until the day that you go to turn the key on the car and there is nothing. They just keep on working and silently doing the job they were designed for until the day they die.
