Today even the older generation is getting in on the technological revolution. Usually as technology advances, it is only the young who keep up with the gadgets and gizmos that are invariably released every year.

However once in awhile a product comes along like the Magellan Roadmate 760 that people no matter their age as simply cannot live without.

GPS devices are becoming more and more common across the board.  Gone are the days when a road map and a pen were the primary navigational tools.  Now you can simply input your destination click a button and wait for the device to tell you which way to go.

Features

  • Turn by turn directions in 11 languages
  • 3.8 inch color display
  • 20 GB hard drive
  • Pre-loaded north American maps
  • 300 PDA address book uploads
  • Touch screen
  • Price $200

Pros

You have to wonder at electronics that are smarter than we are; the Magellan Roadmate 760 has its own small brain.  This brain coupled with a light sensor allows this GPS to automatically adjust the screen brightness.  This helps keep your eyes on the road instead of trying to set the screen so you can see it.

Installation of the Magellan Roadmate 760 could not be easier.  If the unit ships with a cradle if that doubles as a mounting plate for a vehicle suction cup.  Overall you can have this unit installed an up and running within a few minutes.

Entering addresses has also been improved, thanks to the smart spell technology. The Magellan Roadmate 760 anticipates the word you are trying to spell with surprising accuracy.

This device is also capable of detecting slow speeds on the interstate or freeway and will attempt to find you an alternate route around heavy traffic.  Anyone who has ever tried to navigate around Chicago during rush hour knows just how handy this can be.

Cons

The Magellan Roadmate 760 has no battery backup.  This means if connection to the power source is lost or you shut your car off the unit also turns off.  This is not a big deal but you will need to remember to allow the unit time to reacquire the satellite signal.

Some customers find the design big and bulky compared to other units.  This is possibly because the Magellan Roadmate 760 is an older GPS device.  Newer models are more compact however often that is at the expense of the display size.

Bottom Line

Even with the few issues listed above the Magellan Roadmate 760 is a decent GPS device.  It has a few bells and whistles that you will not find with other models including the ability to add points of interest.
