Microphone Cable

By Anne Ahira

From PC microphones to XLRs, microphone cables come in handy if people need them. Whether it’s just for chatting with friends or setting up for a conference, it’s helpful to have a cable in case someone needs to walk around or keep the rest of the audio equipment hidden. Depending on the microphone, it may need a specific type to transmit sound. Usually, it can be based on the size of the connector.

A MP3 player uses a 3.5mm (or 1/8″), while a studio microphone uses a 7 mm (1/4″). Others have special connectors; one of which is XLR. These microphones are used for recording vocals for music or used for live presentations. They also need more power than regular headset microphones.

Once they figure out which type to use, the microphone cables come in various lengths and configured for certain uses. One example is an XLR-1/4″, which is great if you’re using an XLR mic with a single stage amp. There are also ones designed for outdoor use and many can be used with other equipment. ¼” and XLR microphone cables can be used with guitars, keyboards, turntables, and drum machines. 1/8″ cables can be used with external mics for voice recorders and transmitters.

One thing to remember is the distance needed for whatever performance or recording. Also, try to use a few cables as possible. It’s better to use one 6′ cable instead of two 3′ ones to ensure better sound quality. If more than one is needed, make sure the connectors are pushed all the way in or until a click is heard. If it’s loose, static and cut-outs in the audio will occur. Also, some of the connectors have gold tips for better sound and long lasting use.

At home, shoppers have only a few uses for microphone cables. Some desktop computers have the mic input on the back and not many headset or PC mics have a cable long enough. If they pop an extension cable, the problem is solved instantly. That’s about it for anything else.

Extending the input port just gives the user more length to sit back or walk around using a microphone. Other than a voice recorder, not much else needs a microphone cable. If it involves work, then buyers will have to get the ones they need. Adapter cables are also needed for times when someone needs to plug the mic into a different port.

Microphone cables come in different lengths and prices, but Amazon’s generic cables are the first place to look. If a super long cable is needed, there are plenty of sites that will accommodate anyone’s needs. Also, they can be used with other audio equipment in case a mic doesn’t need one. At home, people would only use them to bring a microphone port closer or where it can be seen. Otherwise, microphone cables are a necessity in order to connect (just like the other kinds of cable). They’re nothing new, but some offer the adapter and waterproof cables for specific uses.
