Background on MP3 Player USB
By Anne Ahira
Whether or not you already have a portable music player, you probably are already familiar with the acronym USB. And that’s good because you’ll want an MP3 player USB connection. Before you start shopping mp3 cd players, let’s spend some time on the importance of the connection.
A Little History
Before the MP3 player USB connection became so common, there were other ways to connect devices to your computer. Most of those have gone the way of the dinosaurs. But did you ever wonder where the USB came from or even what it means?
Well, the USB in that MP3 player USB stands for universal serial bus. You’ve probably got several on the device you’re using to read this right now. In fact, many of them may already be in use. Mice, printers, and similar peripherals use the USB connection to communicate with your computer.
But where did they come from and how did the MP3 player USB hook up become standard? The answer actually starts more than a decade ago. Something called smart phones were beginning to appear on the market, and these phones needed a fast way to connect to computers. Parallel ports, which were the most common connections used back then, just weren’t fast enough. Out of that need came the development of USB technology.
As soon as it hit the industry, manufacturers became enamored and began adding it to every computer and making it at least one of the connection options for most peripherals released in the late 1990s and on. When the USB technology upgraded to the 2.0 version a few years ago, the connection became faster so it’s no surprise that MP3 player USB communication would also benefit from this upgrade.
More about MP3 Player USB
The nicest thing about USB is not just its speed but its convenience. Today, almost everything plugs into your computer via these ports which means that’s one less thing you have to worry about. Even when wireless MP3 player USB becomes standard and allows your mp3 music player to communicate wirelessly with your computer, it will be those USB ports that make it all happen.
Of course, there are a few other options that have been introduced in the past as competition for USB technology. Many of these have been introduced as alternatives to MP3 player USB, such as Bluetooth. While Bluetooth connectivity can be wonderful for cell phones, it’s definitely not something that would work as well in the world of portable mp3 players.
Besides being affordable, MP3 player USB connections are simply common enough so they make sense in the grand scheme of technology. Why introduce a new technology when what is already well-established is working so well? That’s the case here. All of the leading digital mp3 players manufacturers understand that the USB connection is important for the continuing success of their products because consumers demand fast, convenient communication between the two devices. Otherwise, they won’t be able to enjoy their music as easily.
