Netgear Routers
By Anne Ahira
To construct an office or home network for your computers to share resources you need a little time, patience and Netgear routers. These devices make it possible to connect several computers and a printer together in order to share internet or printers.
Netgear makes many things for the computer networker; they have routers, wireless routers, Ethernet cards and much more. Suffice it to say they are not new to the networking or computer world.
Netgear routers can be wired or wireless, both have their pros and cons, but for the purposes here, we will be looking at the RP614 router.
Features
- Share a single broadband connection
- Switch with four 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing ports
- Security includes SPI firewall and NAT translation
- 2-year warranty
- Measures 5.8 x 1.1 x 3.8 inches (WxHxD)
- Price $40.
Pros
No matter what you do, online safety is important. You want your network as a whole to be protected from intrusion as well as your computer. Netgear routers address this concern by providing you with double protection. You will have a SPI firewall and NAT translation to protect you from intruders.
Sharing an internet connection has never been easier. You can set up Netgear routers in a matter of minutes and be surfing away on the internet before you know it. When it comes to networking that is a big statement. Linking computers together for internet sharing can become a nightmare fast, that is why easy set up is such a big deal.
This unit is small and sleek in design; the silver and gray coloring allows it to blend in with any computer décor without being an eyesore.
Cons
Apparently, with the first release of this unit there were some problems. People were having trouble with the Netgear routers dropping sessions and overheating. It appears that most of these were issues where home servers and intense technical applications were required. Most people who have a standard set up have no complaints.
Bottom Line
Setting up a network is so much easier with Netgear routers. The company has spent extra effort ensuring that the routers come with good instructions and a set up disc. If you still have problems, they have a responsive tech support more than willing to help you out.
This is not a top of the line router capable of extremely technical applications. It is a simple device that was meant for the average user of one or more computers and maybe a game system for good measure. These Netgear routers are very inexpensive and for the most part people are happy with them.
