In just the past few years two new competing technologies have reinvigorated the market for televisions.

The technologies we are referring to are LCD and plasma screen sets. In this article we are going to discuss the advantages of plasma screen TV.

What is a plasma screen or display panel? Generally speaking, it is a kind of flat panel display that provides superior screen quality and can often be mounted on a wall.

The television itself is made up of thousands of tiny cells between two panels or panes of glass. There is also a mixture of noble gases inside the set that emits ultraviolet light when electricity is run through them. These cells are accurate and reliable and can produce and emit an incredible array of colors.

The plasma screen TV currently competes with the LCD set, which has its own strengths and weaknesses. Both sets are far and away the biggest seller in the US market and around the world. But it remains to be seen which technology will reign supreme.

Advantages

In this section we are going to discuss the advantages of the average plasma screen TV over a traditional TV, not over an LCD set.

Probably the most obvious advantage is the range of colors. The average plasma screen TV can display up to 16.77 million colors. I’m sure you are saying right about now, “Wow, I didn’t even know there were that many colors!”

Well, in all honesty, neither did us! And we would also hate to be the guy who had to count all of those colors.

But for these reasons, and many more, plasma screen TV is the fastest selling new technology on the market today. That includes LCD sets, which have come on strong of late, but have yet to take the lead.

Does the average plasma screen TV have any advantages over the average LCD set? Well, the truth is that most competitive technologies are, well, competitive. That means there is generally a lot of parity.

When it comes to plasma sets, most consumers and industry insiders believe they equal or best LCD sets in several important categories.

To begin with, the average plasma screen TV is less expensive than the average LCD. The reason for this is difficult to say, since both technologies were introduced at about the same time and both are equally popular.

But other than price, it is a tie or a push in several key categories. For example, both plasma and LCD sets have the same high resolution displays, which results in superior picture quality, over traditional sets. And both new technologies are customarily offered with HD quality displays.

Another advantage of a plasma screen TV is that even the largest sets are lightweight. For example, a 42-inch plasma television only weighs about fifty pounds, whereas a 42-inch traditional set would clock in at a back-breaking 250 to 300 pounds.

As far as weight goes, the plasma set is about the same as the LCD set. However, it is true that plasma televisions that are smaller than 32“ are seldom produced. Without delving too far into the science, it has a lot to do with the gases and that only bigger units give users access to brighter more colorful screens.
