RC Battery: Not Just for Kids
By Anne Ahira
There is a world of remote control cars that includes adults as well as children. These RC “toys” are really much more than meets the eye and you might be surprised to find out just how popular this hobby is.
People are very serious about their RC devices and the all important RC battery.
You may think that a battery is simply a battery, however most of the time an RC battery is actually a battery pack.
Like general batteries, these come in a variety of compositions including nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium polymer.
Each RC battery has pros and cons as well as different storage, charging and discharging needs. You should also be aware that different remote control vehicles might require or at least recommend specific chemical composition batteries so check your owner’s manual for information.
Another common misconception for beginners is that a RC battery pack that looks similar in nature to their battery will work. Often times a battery pack will be nearly identical until you check the connectors, if it will not plug into your device it will not work!
Whether you are building a remote control car for racing purposes or just playing around with a helicopter or boat the chances are you will need a replacement RC battery pack at some point. Below are a few common options for your remote control device.

Bottom Line
There is more to the remote control world of vehicles than you might think. What was once merely a cool kids toy has become a serious hobby for adults and children alike.
If this is something, you may be interested in or if you are new to the RC world take some time to familiarize yourself with the battery needs of your new device. Especially if you are planning to race!
