Though they were originally designed and first used to connect telephones, for a number of reasons RJ 45 cable never became popular.

Years later, however, improved Internet technology demanded advanced equipment and RJ 45 cable was right for the job.

Of course, there are still two types of RJ 45 cable, those that are used in telephones and those that are used in computers.

But these days when people talk about RJ 45 cable they are almost always talking about the equipment that is used to connect computers. That is why in this article we will be discussing the cable that is used on computers.

First things first, what is it? RJ 45 cable connects electronic devices like computers over an Ethernet connection. It can also be used to connect printers, cable or DSL modems, and storage devices.

Because there are a few different kinds of RJ 45 cables, it is important to be able to correctly identify them before you connect any device to your network.

The two most popular types of RJ 45 cables are crossover and standard patch cables. While both cables can be used to connect numerous devices to the Internet or to each other, they are often utilized for specific jobs.

For example, the standard patch cable is almost always used to connect a computer to a modem or router or network storage device. The crossover cables, on the other hand, are often used to connect one computer to another, without the need of an independent switch or router.

The cables look the same, but on the inside there is a difference in the wiring, especially in the plug. Using one RJ 45 cable by mistake probably won’t cause any serious damage to the cable or the device that is being connected, it simply won’t connect.

Where are they used? An RJ 45 cable can be used anywhere a device must be connected to the Internet. They are extremely popular in businesses both large and small, but especially when a company requires networking solutions. For these jobs the company will often bring in a professional who will use both types of RJ 45 cables.

You can also find an RJ 45 cable in libraries or really anywhere where several computers share one printer. The cables allow anyone on the network to make copies using the same printer. As you might expect, a simple RJ 45 cable can dramatically cuts costs, since every computer no longer needs its own printer.

In fact, in recent years many businesses have used an RJ 45 cable to cut expenses. One of the most popular ways to trim the proverbial fat is to eschew expensive computer serves and connect a simple and inexpensive Network Attached Storage device (NAS) to the network using an RJ 45 cable.

While an RJ 45 cable is still the most popular product for networking needs, new technology does threaten their privileged position. Probably the most interesting is fiber optic technology, which allows for much greater speeds.

However, this equipment is still far too expensive for most businesses to afford. So, for the time being, it would seem, an RJ 45 cable will continue to lead the pack.
