Samsung DLP
By Anne Ahira
You have probably been inundated with the LCD and plasma debate. Each of these television types are touted as the best in high definition. So much so that the older DLP may sneak into the picture and steal the show! (pun fully intended)
DLP stands for digital light processing and is a process that came from the brilliant minds at Texas Instruments. The main difference between this type of television and the LCD or plasma is the DLP is still a projection set. That means that instead of liquid crystal or gases you have lights, mirrors and a color wheel.
The thing that is drawing customers back to the technology is the price. For about what you would pay for a 42” LCD you can pick up a 61” Samsung DLP television. So is there a big difference and what can you expect from a DLP? Here we will look at the aforementioned Samsung.
Features
- 1080p HD Resolution
- LED Light Source,
- No Lamp Required
- 3D Gaming Ready
- 1 Tuner PIP
- 3 HDMI Inputs
- HDMI-CEC
- $1400
Pros
First of all just as suspected the price is phenomenal. There is no way you will find a LCD or plasma this big in that price range. In fact you will likely pay about $3000 more for a comparable set in either of those formats. Samsung DLP televisions scores big on that point especially in this economy.
One of the biggest problems with DLP from the past was the light source. These televisions depended on an expensive lamp to provide an image. Thankfully, LED light has come along and now you no longer have issues with lamps burning out and costing you anywhere from $150 and up. Big improvement over the early Samsung DLP models.
Another common problem with the DLP technology was something called the rainbow effect. This was a side effect of the spinning color wheel, some people would notice a slight strobing effect and it produced headaches in these people. Part of the problem was the speed of the spinning wheel. Today the speeds are much increased and the rainbow effect is no longer an issue.
Bottom Line
Televisions are a part of our culture nearly everyone has them and many people have more than one. This Samsung DLP would be a nice addition to any family room and the bonus is you will not have to take out a loan to buy it! High definition television for a bargain price now that is a hard combination to beat. This is not LCD or plasma and serious video connoisseurs will know this, but for the price you cannot tell that big of a difference.
