Should You Buy a Sansa c250?

One of my favorite non-iPod MP3 players has to be the Sansa c250. While this player first hit the market back in 2004, it still has plenty of features that make it a smart buy for most music lovers. Plus, it’s one of the most affordable players on the market.

The one I have has a 2GB storage capacity and costs less than $40 at Amazon. The good news is there are other good reasons to recommend the Sansa c250 beyond just its affordable price.

Background on the Sansa c250

If you’re wondering who manufacturers the player, the answer is SanDisk. You probably know SanDisk best for making flash memory and other types of non-volatile storage. The company has been in the business since 1988 so they know what they’re doing.

I was already familiar with SanDisk because I always use their removable memory for my digital camera. They use that same technology to create the storage in their players, such as the Sansa c250.

A Couple of Drawbacks on the Sansa c250

The biggest drawback of the player is that it doesn’t come packaged with an AC adapter for wall charging. You can only charge it up through the USB port on your computer.

That’s not unusual but because I like to take mine on vacation when I prefer to leave my laptop at home I ended up purchasing the optional adapter. I just wish it had come with the adapter from the start. The screen is also a little weak but for the price I’m not complaining too much.

Reasons to Choose the Sansa c250

We’ve talked about some of the drawbacks for the player but now I want to focus on all of the reasons why I’ve actually purchased the player myself. First, I like that it’s small. It’s easy to carry along with me almost anywhere I go.

The FM radio tuner is also a nice touch and is something you won’t find on any iPod. While I’m not the biggest fan of my local radio stations, I do like hearing what other cities have to offer while I’m traveling.

Another one of the my favorite features is the expansion slot. Although the Sansa c250 already comes with a 2 GB hard drive, you can purchase a larger micro SD card and add it to the player to expand the storage.

This can also be another way of transferring songs to your player or of exchanging favorite songs with people you know. When one of my friends finds a song he thinks I’ll like, he adds them to one of these cards and lets me borrow it so I can enjoy it in my Sansa c250.

Also, the player comes with a rechargeable battery that can actually be changed. With most of the players on the market, when the battery stops holding a charge you need to buy a new player. With the Sansa c250, you just have to buy a new battery.
