Sharp 37 1080p
By Anne Ahira
If you are in the market for a 37-inch television, you might want to consider the Sharp line of products.
Sharp Corporation has been in business since 1912 when they produced mechanical pencils from which the company got its name.
After an earthquake destroyed the pencil, manufacturing the company moved to Osaka where they began their long history with electronics.
With over 50 years in the business, the it is little wonder that their lines of televisions are some of the best in the business. The Sharp 37 1080p Aquos is a nice set with true high definition.
1080p vs. 1080i
High definition is a buzzword that is selling many products however; the distinctions can be a bit misleading. The 1080 distinction refers to the resolution the television will display. The difference is in the initial at the end, the I and P.
1080p describes a television that has 1920 x 1080-pixel display the P stands for progressive scan. Bottom line is these sets should display every pixel of a high def broadcast.
When a broadcast is in hig def and transmitted to a progressive scan all the pixel lines, both odd and even are displayed at the same time giving a seamless smooth image.
1080i on the other hand still has the 1920 x 1080-pixel display; however, it is interlaced instead of progressive.
In older televisions, the each frame of video was painted on the screen one line of pixels at a time, beginning with the odd and then the even numbered lines. This in a nutshell is interlacing.
Features
The Sharp 37 1080p is considered true or ultra HD. This simply means it contains the latest in high def technology. Other features include:
- 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
- 6ms response time
- 60,000 hour lamp life
- Built in tuners both analog and digital
- Connection ports- 3 HDMI, side component video, S video and more.
- V chip for parental controls
- Removable table stand
Pricing
Amazingly, for the picture quality and extensive connection ports the price on a Sharp 37 1080p is quite reasonable.
On Amazon you can find this set used for around $706 and refurbished for just under that. At retail locations you may find the price a bit more than that but overall still reasonable.
Customer Reviews
The Sharp 37 1080p has 46 reviews on Amazon and all but three of them rate this television at least four out of five. Some customer comments include:
- Picture quality is outstanding and viewing angles are just as advertised
- Awesome picture quality for a low price
- Beautiful display
Cons:
As with any product there are some cons. Seems like the major problem people had with the Sharp 37 1080p is the lack of Ethernet hookups that are in the description. It seems that this and the DNLA option are only available on a 40-inch display or larger.
Remote is reportedly somewhat weak. Customers preferred the use of a universal remote over the one sent with the Sharp 37 1080p.
Bottom Line
Good quality small television for a reasonable price. If you are looking to build a home theater system this is not the right size for you, however if you need a small set for a small room or office the Sharp 37 1080p could be right for you.
