Stainless Steel Microwave Ovens
By Anne Ahira
Stainless steel equipment and appliances were used in commercial kitchens for years before somebody got the bright idea to offer them to consumers.
And why not? With their sleek, contemporary look, they are an increasing popular choice for new homeowners and for kitchen renovation projects.
Some of the most popular stainless steel appliances include, ovens, dishwashers refrigerators and microwaves.
And if you purchase one, it is likely that you will purchase them all for a more consistent look. But in this article we are only going to discuss one of these appliances, the stainless steel microwave oven.
It is hard to say when the first stainless steel microwave was introduced, but what we do know is that they have achieve incredible popularity in the consumer market in a very short time. Why is this? Well, it really does come down the aesthetic value of these devices.
As you might expect, a stainless steel microwave is exactly the same as any other microwaves in terms of functionality. They have the same buttons, the same heat setting, and the same range of power.
How about the price? Are they more expensive than other microwaves? The answer is yes, but not by as much as you think. The average stainless steel microwave is often only about ten percent more, but that does not include convection ovens.
If you have never heard of them, convection microwave ovens are the next step in microwave technology and many of them are made of stainless steel…probably to present a more modern, even futuristic look.
This may be why many consumers assume that stainless steel microwaves are much expensive than more traditional models, because they are actually looking at a new technology.
The most obvious benefit of a stainless steel microwave oven is that it will not become discolored or fade over time. After all, they are stainless steel. Yes, this is again an aesthetic quality, but because most microwave companies produce both regular microwaves and stainless steel ones, there really is no difference in the technology.
The one and only real practical advantage of a stainless steel microwave is that they are more durable than traditional models. Although it is rare that a regular microwave will be damaged during normal use, they are made of plastic and they can break.
A stainless steel microwave, on the other hand, is generally much heavier and offers superior construction, which obviously makes it much harder to damage and gives it a longer lifespan. In fact, that is why commercial kitchens were the first to use these appliances.
What are the disadvantages? We’re glad you asked. Obviously, no product is perfect, and stainless steel microwaves are no exception.
Probably the number one complaint of owners is that they need to be cleaned quite frequently. Yes, a stainless steel microwave can be a magnet for dust, fingerprints and smudges. This can obviously cancel out the aesthetic appeal and leave you with a dirty or dull looking home appliance.
To solve this problem, most microwave makers have introduced new smudge-free finishes that guarantee that your stainless steel microwave will be gleaming clean twenty-four hours a day. Of course, you still have to clean the inside from time to time.
