Subwoofer Speakers for the Home

Subwoofer Speakers

By Anne Ahira

No, they don’t have anything to do with dogs. A subwoofer is actually a kind of speaker that helps amplify certain low frequency sounds and improves overall sound quality. But that probably won’t mean much to the average owner.

But what does count for something is that subwoofer speakers provide a richer, more textured auditory experience. That is why people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a quality set.

However, it should be noted that when they are improperly installed, subwoofer speakers will actually degrade sound quality to the point where pretty much everything sound out-of-sync or distant.

We mentioned this only because many homeowners mistakenly try to install these speakers on their own, only to discover that they are far more difficult to configure that they had anticipated.

Where are they installed? The most popular uses for subwoofer speakers are in home stereos, theaters or in vehicles. For experienced individuals, a subwoofer is not particularly difficult to install. But for first timers, it can be a real chore.

Why are subwoofers mysterious? Well, the fact is that most people don’t really know what they do or why they need them.

They only know that subwoofer speakers improve overall sound quality which leads many buyers to assume that if they purchase high-quality speakers, then they will not need super woofers.

This is a misconception. The fact is that subwoofer speakers can improve the sound quality of any system no matter how expensive or state-of-the-art.

It can also sometimes be difficult to hear to difference, since a subwoofer only amplifies low frequencies. So, if you don’t listen to music that has a lot of bass in it, you may not be able to tell if a subwoofer is working at all.

It is also true that most listeners will not be able to tell the difference when listening to regular radio programs. Therefore, it would be fair to say that not every listener will benefit from installing subwoofer speakers.

But when it comes to installing a home theater, it is impossible to get the movie theater effect without quality subwoofer speakers. Really, what do you think you’re hearing at the movies when something blows up or Barry White sings? You are hearing the subwoofers!

What you Should Know

There are really only three kinds of subwoofer speakers: doward-firing, forward-firing, and port subwoofers. The most popular type is downward-firing because they produce the biggest effect, i.e., they can actually make the floor throb during a loud movie or song.

Whereas forward-firing speakers are known for their clearer, cleaner sound that produces less vibration and power. Finally, the port speakers are generally attached to other speakers and do not have as much impact as freestanding units.

While all of these devices can improve the overall sound quality on your home systems, it is imperative for you to decide exactly what you need these speakers for before you buy them, as the wrong speakers may not produce the intended effect.
