Getting a 1080p Plasma TV Online
By Anne Ahira
The television market has been one of the strongest in recent years, despite the economic downturn. You might say that’s because so many people are switching to HD sets before the big conversion in the United States takes place, but I think it has more to do with high quality sets going for great prices.
We recently purchased a new 1080p plasma TV to replace a broken DLP set, and I can tell you shopping for one is much better online than in the store.
Why to Choose a 1080p Plasma TV
While there are plenty of different types of televisions available, including LCDs and DLPs, I chose the plasma model for a variety of reasons. For one, I wanted to have a very flat monitor that could hang on the wall.
We have large dogs that kept bumping into our DLP television all the time so I was constantly afraid they would knock it off the stand. While LCDs can also be hung up on the wall, the 1080 plasma TV is better designed for this possibility.
When we bought the DLP originally, the 1080p plasma TV models had some downsides, including a lower life expectancy. Today, this has been improved dramatically.
The average model today can actually last 60,000 hours compared to 30,000 hours for the older models. That means even if you leave your television set on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the screen would not die out on you for almost a full 7 years.
Shopping Online
Some of the limitations of the 1080p plasma TV are the same reasons why I wanted to shop online. The screen, you see, is made completely of glass. That makes the set heavier than models of comparable size. It also means it’s a lot more fragile.
You’re going to have to pay for delivery whether you buy it in a store or online – you don’t want to risk transporting this item on your own – so you might as well shop on the Internet where you can find the best deal possible.
How good of a deal can you get? If you shop at one of the leading nationwide electronics stores, you can buy the LG 60” 60PG60 with 1080p resolution for $3,800. Plus, you’ll have to pay extra to have the television shipped to your home.
If you buy the exact same model from Tiger Direct, you’ll only have to pay $2,900 and shipping is free. That’s a $900 savings even without the savings on the shipping. You can also find the same model at Amazon for about $20 more than that price but you will have to pay for shipping which costs around $200. That’s still a better deal than what you’d find by shopping in an actual store.
The Bottom Line
I would definitely recommend purchasing a 1080p plasma TV, especially now that the technology has improved. However, if you do decide to make that purchase, you should shop online so you can have it delivered to your home and so you can save a lot of money in the process.
