High definition is the word on the street when it comes to televisions. As the shift from analog to digital looms closer and cable companies add, more HD programming people are going to want HDTV TVs. What is the top of the line in HD? Well you have several choices, plasma, LCD, flat panel and projection. Here are some of the top rated HDTV TVs.
Best Flat Panel Plasma
Pioneer has long been an electronics expert, from car stereos to home entertainment packages they have excelled at them all. It seems their excellence has spread to the HDTV TVs as well. The Pioneer PDP 5080HD is one of the top rated flat panel plasma televisions on the market.
This HDTV has excellent picture quality with deep blacks and clear crisp lines. This 50-inch television incorporates smooth video processing that is quiet and reduces image judder. Pioneer is also leading the way in connectivity with four HDMI inputs on this unit.
Cons – Price is an instant detractor from this model, the going price for a new unit is $2,700 before tax and delivery charges.
Best Flat Panel LCD
Sony takes top marks in the LCD field with their 46-inch HDTV TVs. While it does not take the place of the top-level plasma this television performs very well. The first thing you will notice are great black levels, this is due in part to the 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Along with the 120Hz processing and the full 1920 x 1080 resolution gives you full HD with a 178-degree viewing angle. Connectivity is also a plus with three HDMI inputs.
Cons – Smooth motion technology may look unnatural on some films. This is the problem many high definition sets are facing, the display is so much better than the input that it looks off.
Rear Projection HDTV TVs
Flat panels may be the wave of the future but some people still like the projection type sets. In addition to not needing an expensive wall hanger these sets are often times cheaper than their flat panel cousins do.
The best rear projection HDTV is the Sony 55A3000. This is 55 inches of great color and beautiful picture, making it a top performer in projection based HDTV TVs.
Sony Bravia has created a full HD projection television that will rival the images on more expensive models. At just over $1400 this unit is one of the best deals going.
Bottom Line
No matter what your pleasure is when it comes to HDTV TVs, plasma, LCD or projection, you can find any of the above at a price you can live with. Image quality and color have become almost indiscernible between models and it now comes down to personal preference. Look for good contrast ratios and a resolution, 1080p is the best, and you will not be disappointed.
