Hard Drive Portable

By Anne Ahira

Computers are a way of life for nearly everyone on the planet. Children as young as five years old are being exposed to them at home and school. What was reserved for large businesses and the government just a few short years ago has become a standard household product. This has opened up all kinds of possibilities and needs, and one of those needs is for hard drive portable devices.

Hard drive portable devices are available in many sizes and from several companies. The first thing you should know is what a hard drive actually is; this type of drive is a non-volatile storage device that holds digital data on spinning platters.

The term drive refers to the mechanical “spinning” of the disk. This will help differentiate a true hard drive from other storage units such as thumb drives which only store data but without the mechanical movement of the disk.

There are many reasons you may want to save large amounts of data to a mobile storage unit such as a hard drive portable device. You may want to download and save movies from the internet, save your broad music collection or simply back up files for your current computer. Here are a few possibilities when you are considering hard drive portable devices.

Seagate 250 GB

What was just a short time ago measured in mega bytes has been upgraded to gigabytes and terabytes. The Seagate 250 GB hard drive portable device is one of the smaller units you can purchase today. This is a great entry-level portable hard drive.

Features

Iomega 320 GB

Iomega is another well-known manufacturer of quality computer accessories. They offer several hard drive portable units including this 320 GB model. This unit offers a little more space than the 250 GB device listed above.

Features

  • USB 2.0 interface available with no external power supply required
  • Ultra portable, fits easily into a shirt or pocket
  • Iomega Protection Suite software
  • 3 year warranty
  • $70 Amazon Price

This little hard drive portable device may be the smallest drive you can find. It will fit easily in a shirt pocket and requires no outside power supply. The only complaint when it comes to this unit is the fit of the USB cord to the back of the unit; the fit is not entirely snug. One possible solution is to shave a tiny bit of the plastic around the USB male end; this may allow the cable to fit more snugly.

Bottom Line

These are but two of the many hard drive portable units available. You may find that you prefer Seagate to Western Digital or other popular brand and thankfully, you will be able to find the perfect size across all brands. External hard drive portable units are handy for storing important data, backing up your computer or simply for fun.
