If you are in the market for a new plasma television, you might want to take a look at the Panasonic 50” plasma. Plasma has an advantage over other forms of HD televisions with the deep vibrant colors they can display and the smooth action scenes.

Features

  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
  • 4096 shades of gradation
  • Viera link- lets you control all of your home theater with one remote
  • Gallery player
  • Built in SD Slot with photo viewer software installed
  • 3 HDMI ports on most sets, 4 HDMI on some

Pros

When it comes to color reproduction, you cannot get any better than plasma and this Panasonic 50” plasma is the cream of the crop. Anti reflection and anti glare technology combine to provide a crisp clear picture from any angle. Deep blacks and crisp whites make a huge difference as well and the Panasonic 50” plasma addresses this both with the huge dynamic contrast ratio of a million to one and real black innovations.

Panasonic has also incorporated what they call deep color; many TV’s expand the range of colors your HD TV can display however deep color actually increases the number of colors. This allows your HD Panasonic 50 inch plasma go from millions to billions of colors, which eliminates color banding, enables the increased contrast ratio and gives you many more shades in between colors.

Sports and action scenes never looked better, with over 900 lines of moving images after images are practically eliminated.

Connectivity is becoming a real issue with all new HD televisions; the Panasonic 50 inch plasma has gone a long way in addressing this problem. As of today, not many people are connecting more than one or two high definition devices. However as technology progresses the need for more HDMI ports will increase, with at least three ports on most models and four on others the Panasonic 50 inch plasma is a set ready for the transition.

One of the biggest problems plasma has traditionally had is the aging of the pixels. Over time and use, they begin to dim and lose some luster. Previous years models had a half-life of 60,000 hours that means at this mark the screen will lose half of its brightness. This model Panasonic 50 inch plasma has an increased half-life of 100,000 hours, this is nearly 30 years!

Cons

Plasma manufacturers have worked long and hard to do away with burn in problems. While it is true that the risk is less than it used to be, burn in is still possible especially in the first few hours of use.

Overall

Previous models of Panasonic 50 inch plasma televisions have won consumer reports best plasma of the year; this one looks to be no different. This is a good choice for anyone looking for a large plasma screen television.

50 Plasma

The Good

Can hang almost anywhere; gives your home a true theater appearance; high resolution models are available

The Bad

Glass screens are fragile and very heavy – a bad combination; screens also reflect light which can degrade the image quality

The Bottom Line

If you have an empty wall yearning for a massive television, a 50 plasma could be a great choice. Just be aware of the drawbacks that come with owning one of these televisions. Hire professional installers for the mounting brackets and be sure to have the set delivered to your home by professionals as well.

Review

If you’ve been won over by the idea of hanging your television on the wall just as you might hang a portrait, then the 50 plasma model might be for you. By 50, we mean 50 inches. By plasma, we mean one of the hottest television technologies available. While this idea of having a massive screen mounted to your wall almost like in a movie theater is impressive, the real question is should you make the purchase?

Obviously, the ability to hang the screen on the wall is impressive and is not just advertising hype. These screens are so thin that you can literally hang them on almost any wall of your home. In one commercial, a couple even hangs their television on the ceiling of their bedroom.

Because you can hang the screen, you’re going to have more flexibility and can sometimes purchase a larger model than you might have been able to fit in your home otherwise. Plus, you can hide all of the wires and power connections in the wall to give the screen a cleaner appearance.

Now is a good time to consider buying a 50 plasma because prices have started to come down and will undoubtedly come down further as more people adopt HDTV technology. Be careful about buying only on price.

You want to pay attention to the resolution, as well, because this is going to determine the quality of your picture. The lowest resolution you’ll probably find on these models is 720p. You really want either 1080i or 1080p. If you want the best picture quality possible and you can afford the upgrade, go for the full 1080p.

There are some down sides when you purchase a 50 plasma, however. For one, the screen is fragile. Because of the technology, the screen is almost entirely made of glass. Glass can easily be broken obviously. The glass screen also makes the sets heavier than you might imagine.

For this reason, having the wall brackets professionally installed is not a bad idea. Another drawback of the 50 plasma glass screen is that it reflects the light which can cause your image to look bad. When placing the screen, you should avoid any area which will have contact with sunlight or other lighting sources for this reason.
