Tom Tom Cable for the iPod

Tom Cable

By Anne Ahira

Tom Tom is the world’s number one producer of GPS (Global Positioning System) devices on the planet.

Each year, more and more drivers have come to rely on this new technology to help them get where they are going on time and without getting hopeless and embarrassingly lost in the process. For no matter what most men say, everyone has been lost at one time or another.

But as great and as helpful as the Tom Tom products are, you don’t become and remain a market leader simply be doing the same old thing. That is why the company has teamed up with other popular makers of technological devices and has released a number of compatible accessories that can be used by owners of these products.

In this article we are going to talk about the Tom Tom cable, which gives iPod users the ability to control and listen to their iPods over their Tom Tom GPS units.

All you have to do is connect the audio cable to the car stereo and you can listen to your favorite iPod songs and playlists. The Tom Tom cable will only work with the Go models, as they are the only units that have a stereo connector port.

Of course, they also have an iPod connector on the other end that gives you the ability to control your iPod with the touch-screen on your Tom Tom unit.

The touch screen of these units is extremely easy to use, as most Tom Tom owners will freely admit, and they give you one-touch access to all of your favorite iPod features. It also gives you access to mp3s, which can then be played on your car stereo speakers.

How about the Tom Tom cable? Well, it is 200 centimeters in length (over six feet), which will give you the ability to listen to tunes anywhere in the car, except the trunk. These cables are fairly thin and it would really be more appropriate to refer to them as wires.

Probably the most common question when it comes to a Tom Tom cable is what happens when the device has to give you directions? Will you hear your favorite singer say, “Turn right at the next intersection?” No, of course, not…we’re just kidding. The Tom Tom unit merely puts the music on hold when it needs to give driving directions.

As you might expect, the Tom Tom cable gives you the ability to control every standard feature and function of your iPod, such as play, pause, shuffle, select, next song, previous song, etc. Currently, the Tom Tom cable is compatible with the iPod Phone, the iPod nano, iPod video, as well as several other popular iPod models.

Complaints

From the reviews that we have read, most folks reported that the Tom Tom cable can be a tangled mess. What we mean is that to take advantage of the full system you will need to use four cables that can easily become tangled on your dashboard or even on your gear shift.

These cables include the Tom Tom power, the external mic, the iPod cable, and the car stereo input. And although it is possible to reduce the cable count to three if you have a Bluetooth, three cables is still a bit much!
