For years, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) were the best way to watch television on the big screen.

But then Texas Instruments introduced a new projection technology they called DLP, or Digital Light processing.

The operation of this new technology is actually quite fascinating, even for those who aren’t interested in technology.

You see, the DLP is built around a semiconductor that is known as a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD).

The DMD is activated when a light reflects off of it and the DMD then manipulates it by coordinating the angles of thousands of tiny mirrors on its surface.

While travelling to the DMD, the light moves through a color wheel that can filter it through any color on the standard spectrum.  It is this process that results in a cleaner, sharper picture.

Because it is a propriety technology and companies have to pay to use it, DLPs tend to be more expensive than CRT projection systems, but still less costly than Plasmas or LCDs. In the rest of this article we are going to discuss the new DLPs from Toshiba.

Though Toshiba has certainly branched out and is now producing everything from laptop computers to Digital Video Recorders, Television sets will likely always be the company’s bread and butter. The new sets offered by Toshiba are DLPs and they are sold under their popular Cinema Series.

When DLPs first came on the scene, Toshiba was one of the first companies to recognize their potential, which is why they are one of the market leaders in rear projection television, along with Samsung.

In fact, Samsung is the current market leader, but Toshiba has been rapidly gaining ground due to competitively-priced products and strong reviews.

Toshiba projectors are prized for their compatibility with HD as most consumers claim that the picture on their sets is superior to anything the competition has to offer. The company sells screen sizes from approximately 42″ and up.

These large screens come in handy when projectors are used to watch the big game or in the boardroom. In fact, Toshiba projectors are extremely popular with large companies that use their sets to impress clients and edify employees.

Toshiba has always been known for the style of their sets and Toshiba projectors are no exception. They are not only smaller and more portable than traditional projectors, but they are also sleeker and can be set up in seconds.

The picture is also far sharper and is capable of producing an extremely bright picture, although not quite as bright as an LCD. That means that you no longer have to turn the lights off when using Toshiba projectors.

You see, the reason that viewers must be in a dark room when watching something on a traditional projector is because the light technology and the light source are simply not powerful enough to create a bright picture. But DLP technology has solved this problem.

Lastly, the price of these sets should certainly be a major consideration if you are not fixated on owning a wall-mounted set.

While it is true that wall-mounted sets do have advantages, when you consider the amazing price savings over Plasmas and even LCDS and the fact that performance and picture quality have increased so substantially, it is no wonder why Toshiba projectors are so popular.
