Toshiba began in 1875 when Hisashige Tanaka opened a factory that made telegraph equipment in Shimbashi, Tokyo. From there they created many modern conveniences such as electric lightbulbs, clothes washers, and vacuum cleaners until 1939 when the Tokyo Electric Company merged with Shibaura Engineering Works Co., Ltd. and established Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd.

And finally in 1939 again, these two companies, who were considered as important leaders within their own respective fields, merged in order to form an especially integrated electric equipment designer as well as manufacturer. It became known as the Tokyo Shibaura Denki, also as the Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd. The company was soon well known as its shortened name ‘Toshiba,’ which became its official name in 1978. But, in 1985 Toshiba introduced world’s first Toshiba laptop personal computers.

Today, Toshiba is a known world leader in high technology, as well as being a diversified manufacturer and marketer of advanced electronic and electrical products. They span information and communications equipment and systems, as well as Internet-based solutions and services.
