Good USB Software for your Flash Drive

Flash drives are decreasing in price and are increasing in storage capacity and since they continue to use the USB specification, they are more ideal than other storage media in transferring files from one device to another.

Some flash drives have so much extra space that developers thought of the idea of developing portable USB software so people can run these programs right from their flash drive without going through installation procedures.

Portable Troubleshooting Tools

Computers run into trouble at any given moment especially if they are constantly connected to the Internet since new malware may break into the system if malicious sites are visited.

Some tampering of settings caused 3rd party software downloaded from the Internet being installed may also lead to problems that may be difficult to fix. Portable troubleshooting tools such as CCleaner and many of the mini tools by NirSoft and Sysinternals can help troubleshoot various system problems.

Portable Recovery Software

There may be some instances where files are deleted unintentionally and if they are not found in the Recycle Bin, all hopes could be lost in recovering them. As long as secure deletion methods weren’t performed, there could be a chance for that deleted file to be recovered if a file recovery application is installed.

This could be a problem if there is no such software and downloading or installing a copy now may affect the odds of the file getting recovered since new data needs to be written.

Therefore it is best to have a portable file recovery application like Recuva to give the USB flash drive the ability to recover deleted files in any Windows computer even if no recovery application is installed.

Portable File Readers

Your own computer may have all of the necessary software to read files such as compressed archives, certain audio and video formats, and other files that cannot be opened without a special 3rd party software.

Taking these files with you may not ensure that you can open them in other computers unless you include the installer and install it in the other system.

Not all computers allow such file readers to be installed, but if you have some portable file readers in your flash drive, you can view those files easily by loading the USB software and then opening the file that it supports.

A perfect example of such USB software is SE-Explorer which supports a wide variety of audio, video, flash, archive, document, and picture formats.

Although many portable USB software should work fine with all flash drives available, there is a certain specification called U3 that allows special U3 portable applications to be run from a convenient menu and usually has virus protection abilities. Many of the SanDisk flash drives have this specification and can be found in Amazon.com

Portable applications are generally small in size weighing less than 10 MB, but in order to have a complete suite of USB software and still have room for other important files for transferring, it is best to get USB flash drives that are greater than 2 GB and Amazon should be selling plenty that are affordable.
