The Facts About a Waterproof MP3 Player

We all want to get a little bit fitter and as the weather turns warmer the swimming pool starts to look at lot more appealing than a stationary bike or a run around the neighborhood as an exercise option.

The problem, however, is that if you don’t have a waterproof MP3 playeryou won’t be able to enjoy your music while you’re swimming and we all know that good music is key to a great workout ? above and below water. That’s why I decided to look at Finis SwiMP3. Here’s what I found out.

The Good News

The great thing about this waterproof MP3 player is that it works. I’ve used it in the pool for a few weeks and it’s still working really well. What has surprised me the most about this waterproof MP3 playeris how amazing the sound quality is.

That’s because the unit uses bone conduction which has the music vibrating off the cheekbones so it doesn’t sound muffled or anything like that. Bone conduction sounds awful, doesn’t it? But it’s completely safe and  works amazingly well!

If you have to wear goggles when you’re underwater, this works great with them as well. The waterproof MP3 player is designed to attack directly to the goggles. How’s that for practical?

The Bad News

While the sound quality is phenomenal, I wasn’t as impressed by the price. The cost is around $120 at Amazon and that’s only for 128 MB of music. You can only fit about 20 songs on one of these players. That means you’d better use that space for the songs you don’t mind hearing over and over again.

Even if the capacity was a bit larger, $120 is still a bit high when you consider that you can’t use this waterproof MP3 player when you’re on land. The bone conduction technology doesn’t work without the water pressure so you’re just not going to be able to make it work. That means you’ll still need a different player for all of your other workout methods.

The Bottom Line

While I was really hedging about whether or not this waterproof MP3 player was a good idea or not, I also found a product called Otterbox which sells for almost $40 at Amazon and works with most iPods. Despite the name which suggests water protection, that’s not something included at all. And that made me realize there really aren’t that many alternatives for people who enjoy the water and their music combined.

For that reason, I’m recommending this waterproof MP3 player, despite its high price and low capacity. It’s not going to do everything you might want but it will provide an hour or two of great sound quality that can make your swim even more enjoyable.
