Western Digital Scorpio Features
By Anne Ahira
The 2.5-inch hard drives that are meant for laptops and external casings are increasing in demand as more laptops are being purchased since they are more affordable, portable, and powerful than the models released in the previous years.
Average laptops usually come with at least 120 GB to around 250 GB although there is some offering much more space, but may not cater to all people because of the increased cost.
Laptops with high storage capacities are usually backed up with powerful specs for gamers and professionals to enjoy.
There are a lot of people that may not need powerful hardware, but still wish to have more than enough space to store all of their music, applications, games, videos, photos, and other media. The Western Digital Scorpio drives provide enough space while offering better quality to assure that the data is safe and fast-performing.
Wide Range of Storage Capacities
The Western Digital Scorpio series consist of 10 different mobile hard drives ranging from 80 GB all the way to 1 TB. Low capacities are available for people that need to upgrade their old laptops or for compatibility with low-end specs and operating systems.
The higher capacities like the 1 TB and 750 GB drives are also available for those that need to keep tons of high definition content and other large files. For even greater compatibility, 80 GB to 320 GB capacities are offered in the older PATA interface for older laptops to enjoy a fairly higher storage capacity.
The 80 GB and 160 GB versions also have the older SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface while all capacities get the best performing SATA 3 GB/s interface. With these three interfaces, any of the Western Digital Scorpio drives should work with any laptop as long as the interface is supported.
Improved Protection
All Scorpio drives use a technology known as ShockGuard to protect the platter surfaces and sensitive internals from shocks. It works with the SecurePark technology that keeps the recording heads away from the disk surface whenever the drive turns off or during spin up or spin down situations.
This decreases the likelihood of wear and tear as well as additional resistance to shocks even when it isn’t active. Exclusive to Scorpio Black WD drives is a free-fall sensor that parks the head if the laptop is accidentally dropped.
Fast and Quiet Operation
Combined with the SATA 3 GB/s interface is a 5400 RPM (Scorpio Blue) or 7200 RPM (Scorpio Black) spin speed where the 5400 RPM is more affordable and should satisfy most consumers while the 7200 RPM is better suited for people that need desktop-class performance.
The 12 ms access time contributes nicely to the other specifications of the laptop such as RAM and processor clock speeds. With the WhisperDrive technology, the Western Digital Scorpio drives not only run without any noise, but also consume less power which means longer battery life for laptops of any kind.
Any of the Scorpio drives are recommended for data to be more secure and if the desired capacity is less than or equal to 320 GB, then the Scorpio Black drives are recommended for maximum performance.
